When Should You Schedule Newborn Photos? A Timeline for Lodi & Elk Grove Moms

The Golden Window For Booking

There is so much to prepare for when you’re expecting - the nursery, the car seat, and that ever-growing “to-do” list. But one question I get asked most often at my Lodi studio is “When is the best time to book my newborn session?”

The truth is, those sleepy, curly newborn poses you see in my gallery are best captured within the first 14 days of life. Because babies don’t wait for a convenient time to arrive, my calendar at Rockabye Photography fills up months in advance. To ensure you don’t miss this feeling window, here is everything you need to know about timing your session.

When it comes to professional newborn portraiture, timing is everything! While it might feel early to think about photos before you’ve even picked out a nursery color, the “Golden Window” for booking your session is actually during your second trimester.

Most of my clients in the Lodi and Stockton area reach out to secure their date right around their 20-week anatomy scan. By the time you hit the halfway mark of your pregnancy, your "to-do" list is likely growing, and checking "Book Newborn Photographer" off that list provides huge peace of mind.

Why the second trimester?

Booking during this time ensures that I can reserve a spot for you on my monthly calendar. Because babies have their own schedules, I only take a limited number of due dates each month. This flexibility allows me to guarantee a session for my booked families in my Lodi, CA studio, whether your little one decides to arrive a week early or a few days late. Waiting until the third trimester—or until the baby is already here—often means the calendar is already full, and you might miss that tiny, "curly" newborn window (typically 5 to 14 days old) that makes these portraits so magical.

Why Booking Early Matters

You might wonder, "If we don't know the exact day the baby will arrive, how can we book a date?" This is exactly why booking a specialist matters. When you reserve your session at Rockabye Photography, you aren't just booking a random morning on the calendar; you are securing a priority spot based on your due date.

I only accept a limited number of newborns each month at my Lodi studio. By capping my monthly sessions, I ensure that I have the flexibility to move your actual shoot date if your little one arrives earlier or later than expected. This "on-call" style of scheduling is a luxury service that ensures your baby is photographed during that ideal 5-to-14-day window when they are most sleepy and comfortable in those adorable, tucked poses.

Booking early also gives us plenty of time to plan the creative details of your session. From selecting colors that match your home decor to browsing my exclusive maternity and newborn wardrobe, being prepared allows us to focus entirely on your baby the moment you walk through the studio doors. When you book ahead, you’re not just getting a photoshoot—you’re getting a stress-free experience from start to finish.

What If My Baby Is Already Here?

If you are reading this with your little one already in your arms and you haven’t booked yet—don't panic! While I highly recommend booking in the second trimester, I always encourage parents to reach out. Occasionally, due to the unpredictable nature of birth, a spot may open up in my Lodi photography studio last minute.

If my newborn calendar is completely full or baby is just well beyond that newborn phase, we can always look toward a Milestone portrait. These are captured any time after 4 months old and are just as darling! While they may not be as tiny as they were in those first two weeks, milestone sessions are full of personality, gummy smiles, and "chunky" baby rolls that are just as precious to document. Whether you are in Stockton, Galt, or Elk Grove, it is never too late to start documenting your family’s legacy.

Securing Your Legacy

The first few weeks of your baby’s life will go by in a beautiful, sleep-deprived blur. Before you know it, those tiny fingers will be grasping yours, and the newborn days will be a memory. My goal at Rockabye Photography is to make sure those memories are preserved in the most beautiful way possible.

By booking your newborn session early, you can cross one more thing off your "nesting" list and rest easy knowing that your baby’s first portraits are in expert hands.

Lodi, California Maternity Photographer | Anna's Studio Maternity Session

April 7, 2023 Shannon Lado

Every time I do a maternity session, I am always amazed when I get a questionnaire back that says “You’ll have to help me because I’m not comfortable in front of the camera.” As a mom myself and as someone who is 100% awkward (legit, I suck lol) in front of the camera, I completely get this feeling of just wanting to document this time but really not being sure how you feel about being vulnerable and the focus of an entire session for an hour! But, I always am amazed because let me tell you: my moms ROCK their sessions and I’m talking like one hundred percent of the time.

Before our session, Anna indicated this same thought that she really had never done a session and wasn’t sure how to pose or what to do and I told her, “Don’t you worry. We’ve got this.” Like nearly all of my moms end up being, she was so natural and absolutely killed her session. When I was editing, I thought how you would never know that she was unsure. She absolutely GLOWED. I think too, it’s hard enough being in front of the camera but then, you have this extra bowling ball on the front of your body that you’re adjusting to every day and is growing every day so that makes moms even a little more unsure about how to pose. For me, it is the absolute greatest accomplishment and joy to be able to show each of my mommas that 1. you CAN do this and 2. you are an absolute KNOCKOUT.

My other favorite part about this session was that we included dad into some pieces of the session and he too was so natural. He melded right into the session and did so much without me even really having to direct him. Their love and joy for their new sweet bundle was so obvious and just kind of exploded out of my lens without us even trying.

Studio sessions are also just becoming one of my favorite things for maternity. It focuses so much more on you and your pregnancy and while I will never give up my outdoor maternity sessions (because I really do love those so much too and the backdrop it can give), studio maternity sessions have created a special creative place in my heart. Add some Victoria’s Secret wings and a gorgeous mama belly and we’ve got another Rockabye maternity session in the books!

Lodi, California Newborn Photographer | Liam's Newborn Session

March 3, 2023 Shannon Lado
Lodi, California Newborn Photographer | Rockabye Photography Newborn Photos

One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to know my clients better. This is one of the most intimate parts of your life when you are the most vulnerable as a mom and letting me into your world to capture this special time is not just a gift that I hope to give to you, but also a gift that you give to me! Liam’s daddy is my husbands co-worker and while I had met their sweet little family before Liam had arrived, I didn’t know them well. A few hours in the studio with a toddler and a newborn will definitely lend us to getting to know each other and I absolutely loved capturing their beautiful family and getting to know their bond and personalities.

Lodi, California Newborn Photographer | Rockabye Photography Newborn Photos

Big brother was in no mood for photos and honestly this is 100% normal. All moms hope and pray that their toddler will snuggle up to their new baby but almost always, these things take time! They’re in a new environment, with a stranger (I’m pretty cool and all but still…haha!), and a new sibling that they’re still trying to figure out if they’re a permanent fixture of the family or not! Sometimes, actually almost always, this part of the session is anything but fluid. It can stress moms out but momma took it in stride and both parents held it together so well with patience as we navigated brother and his feelings about the whole situation. I was so impressed with both parents and how patient they were through that process. When this is what goes down, these photos of them together in the end are the most gratifying part of my session. I LOVE being able to win a toddler over…showing them that their feelings are ok and we can work with them to make something beautiful happen for mom and dad.

One of my favorite shots of the entire session is big brother by himself. I was standing on my ladder getting photos of mom and dad and he decided he wanted photos but his way. He walked up to me and just grinned and I had to snap a few shots. It was the sweetest thing and he was letting me know that he was warming up to the whole thing. I just can’t get over that sweet shot.

Sweet baby Liam was an absolute dream and slept through the whole thing - patient with whatever we needed to do during the process! All 4 pieces of this beautiful family were absolute rock stars and it was such an honor getting to capture them and the amazing bond that makes a family. Side note: do these two not make the most gorgeous kids??? Keep ‘em comin’, V Family!

Lodi, California Newborn Photographer | Rebeca's Newborn Session

February 19, 2023 Shannon Lado
Lodi, California Newborn Photographer | Rockabye Photography Newborn Photos

There are certain parts of my job that I see over and over again in each session: I don’t think I can tell you how many times parents are truly blown away when they come in only a few weeks after their newborn session for their ordering appointment and cannot believe how tiny their baby once was and how quickly they had grown just in those few weeks. Being able to look back on details that are gone in a blink of an eye is really one of the magical things about photography! This is one of the many reasons that I really encourage parents to book their session before baby has arrived so that we can get you in the studio within 2 weeks after birth. Those fresh features, flaky skin, and shriveling umbilical cord are pieces that are so fleeting and you will likely forget unless you invest in these precious memories.

Lodi, California Newborn Photographer | Rockabye Photography Newborn Photos

One of my other favorite parts of my job is getting to know your family and why this is such an important process for you to capture! Every family has an important story to tell and various reasons why a truly special newborn session is so important to them. I say over and over again, working with me and being in my studio is an experience. It’s not something I want to just grab a few quick snaps and push you out the door. This is about you, your new miracle, and your story.

For Rebeca’s family, this was their first baby in over 10 years and their first girl so everything was so special to mom to make it girly and to celebrate this new life. One of the sweetest parts of our whole session was incorporating big brother (who was in love with his new baby) and capturing some gorgeous family shots. Mom really wanted the family shots to be a focus of our session and I was more than happy to indulge! She wore one of my gowns (one of my favorite decisions moms make and another thing that makes these sessions so relaxing and easy for you) and we just really focused on the beauty of their new family.

Lodi, California Newborn Photographer | Camila's Newborn Mini Session

February 7, 2023 Shannon Lado
Lodi, California Newborn Photographer | Rockabye Photography Newborn Photos

When you book a Rockabye newborn session, you have two options: the Luxe Newborn session (my standard newborn session) or the Newborn Mini Session. Although most of my clients opt for the Luxe, the Mini Session is perfect for those clients who sometimes say they don’t want a full session but still want to capture this time! Not everyone knows really what the difference is between the two and it’s one of my most common questions asked so here it is!

The Newborn Mini Session is an abbreviated version of my Luxe session. The Luxe is multiple setups of baby in props and on the table (fabric) and includes family photos if you’d like them! The Luxe usually runs about 2-3 hours long depending on how baby does. Most babies do great and it can be done in the 2-2.5 hour range to allow for extra feeds, etc. if need be.

The Rockabye Mini Session is one hour maximum and two set-ups total! Camila’s Newborn Mini is a perfect example of this! Mom and Dad wanted some family & sibling shots as well as some individual baby shots of her. For something like this, parent/sibling shots are considered one setup because we are doing multiple shots in front of one drop with everyone. The second setup would be baby alone in a prop where I can also incorporate brother for a few shots!

Sometimes clients wonder, well what if my baby can’t do all of this in under one hour? Ideally, we are shooting your session 5-14 days after baby’s arrival which, even with feeds, will create the best scenario for a sleeping baby. This, paired with the prep tips I give you the morning of and your baby whisperer (me!), one hour is usually plenty for two simple setups. If baby isn’t overly cooperative and is wide awake, I will shoot some awake shots while i’m working to get them asleep. With my experience and expose over the years working with literally hundreds of newborns, I have found ways to beautifully capture your sweet little one in one hour if that’s what you’d like!

Looking for something a bit more? The Luxe is the perfect option for you! Whether you choose the Rockabye Luxe Newborn Session or the Rockabye Mini Newborn Session, I will have the perfect experience for you and your family to capture all of those tiny details and features of baby’s first few weeks of life!

Here is a bit more from Camila’s Newborn Mini Session ~

Lodi, California Newborn Photographer | Kenzie's Newborn Session

January 11, 2023 Shannon Lado
Lodi, California Newborn Photographer | Rockabye Photography Newborn Photos

Those first few weeks of life with your newborn are truly the times that you want to hold onto forever. Have you ever noticed how quickly your newborn changes even in the first week after birth? Sometimes, I dont even think we realize the changes until you take photos every day and compare them over time: it really happens that quickly! That’s part of the reason that I fell in love with what I do - capturing those tiny features in those first few moments with your baby that you’ll never get back!

Kenzie was mom’s third and final baby so she really wanted to soak in those last moments and details with her since she would never being doing this stage again! When filling out her questionnaire, she hoped for shots with those tiny stuffed animals that I love using, beautiful sibling shots of all 3 of her babies to remember forever, tiny details of her features, and of course, the froggy pose (one of my most requested shots but also, my absolute favorite one to do!).

Not all babies will perform the froggy shot but these days, I’d say I have a really good success rate - maybe about 90%! I had just gotten this gorgeous purply mauve drop in and couldn’t wait to use it on Kenzie with that gorgeous skin she had.

When mom came in for her ordering appointment, she chose all of her digital images as well as some new larger prints for her walls. Digitals are always such a good idea for security and to have as back-up should anything happen to your prints down the road but there is nothing like turning your baby’s sweet face into beautiful art for your home. Don’t forget that you’ll probably almost never look at your images on your computer - they’re really there purely for safe keeping. The joy really comes from getting to see your images on your wall every single day. They are truly priceless!
