When Should You Schedule Newborn Photos? A Timeline for Lodi & Elk Grove Moms

The Golden Window For Booking

There is so much to prepare for when you’re expecting - the nursery, the car seat, and that ever-growing “to-do” list. But one question I get asked most often at my Lodi studio is “When is the best time to book my newborn session?”

The truth is, those sleepy, curly newborn poses you see in my gallery are best captured within the first 14 days of life. Because babies don’t wait for a convenient time to arrive, my calendar at Rockabye Photography fills up months in advance. To ensure you don’t miss this feeling window, here is everything you need to know about timing your session.

When it comes to professional newborn portraiture, timing is everything! While it might feel early to think about photos before you’ve even picked out a nursery color, the “Golden Window” for booking your session is actually during your second trimester.

Most of my clients in the Lodi and Stockton area reach out to secure their date right around their 20-week anatomy scan. By the time you hit the halfway mark of your pregnancy, your "to-do" list is likely growing, and checking "Book Newborn Photographer" off that list provides huge peace of mind.

Why the second trimester?

Booking during this time ensures that I can reserve a spot for you on my monthly calendar. Because babies have their own schedules, I only take a limited number of due dates each month. This flexibility allows me to guarantee a session for my booked families in my Lodi, CA studio, whether your little one decides to arrive a week early or a few days late. Waiting until the third trimester—or until the baby is already here—often means the calendar is already full, and you might miss that tiny, "curly" newborn window (typically 5 to 14 days old) that makes these portraits so magical.

Why Booking Early Matters

You might wonder, "If we don't know the exact day the baby will arrive, how can we book a date?" This is exactly why booking a specialist matters. When you reserve your session at Rockabye Photography, you aren't just booking a random morning on the calendar; you are securing a priority spot based on your due date.

I only accept a limited number of newborns each month at my Lodi studio. By capping my monthly sessions, I ensure that I have the flexibility to move your actual shoot date if your little one arrives earlier or later than expected. This "on-call" style of scheduling is a luxury service that ensures your baby is photographed during that ideal 5-to-14-day window when they are most sleepy and comfortable in those adorable, tucked poses.

Booking early also gives us plenty of time to plan the creative details of your session. From selecting colors that match your home decor to browsing my exclusive maternity and newborn wardrobe, being prepared allows us to focus entirely on your baby the moment you walk through the studio doors. When you book ahead, you’re not just getting a photoshoot—you’re getting a stress-free experience from start to finish.

What If My Baby Is Already Here?

If you are reading this with your little one already in your arms and you haven’t booked yet—don't panic! While I highly recommend booking in the second trimester, I always encourage parents to reach out. Occasionally, due to the unpredictable nature of birth, a spot may open up in my Lodi photography studio last minute.

If my newborn calendar is completely full or baby is just well beyond that newborn phase, we can always look toward a Milestone portrait. These are captured any time after 4 months old and are just as darling! While they may not be as tiny as they were in those first two weeks, milestone sessions are full of personality, gummy smiles, and "chunky" baby rolls that are just as precious to document. Whether you are in Stockton, Galt, or Elk Grove, it is never too late to start documenting your family’s legacy.

Securing Your Legacy

The first few weeks of your baby’s life will go by in a beautiful, sleep-deprived blur. Before you know it, those tiny fingers will be grasping yours, and the newborn days will be a memory. My goal at Rockabye Photography is to make sure those memories are preserved in the most beautiful way possible.

By booking your newborn session early, you can cross one more thing off your "nesting" list and rest easy knowing that your baby’s first portraits are in expert hands.
